Did you know that colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer? Only lung cancer kills more Americans each year than colon cancer, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Colorectal screenings are part of the primary healthcare program at Hill Country Mission for Health, playing a pivotal role in the early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer for our patients. This type of cancer is one of the most prevalent and deadly forms of cancer worldwide. We use fecal occult blood tests, which alert us to the potential for cancer in our high-risk patients. Results from this screening will tell our healthcare provider that a colonoscopy is necessary to identify precancerous polyps or detect cancer at an early, more treatable stage.
By undergoing regular screenings, our patients can significantly reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer and increase their chances of successful treatment and survival, if cancer is in fact detected. However, access to screenings can be limited due to the financial constraints of our patients. Because we serve an impoverished population, funding from organizations like the Colon Cancer Coalition and others, as well as financial support from our own community, is critical to our clinic if we are going to be able to help our patients.
Fundraising initiatives like the "Get Your Rear in Gear" event play a crucial role in addressing these barriers by providing financial assistance, raising awareness, and supporting research efforts aimed at improving screening methods and accessibility. Through this fundraising, our community can come together to support our patients, potentially saving their lives.
