My name is Rebecca Gutierrez and colon cancer is personal to me. My mom, Diana Gutierrez, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, the nation’s #2 cancer killer, in 2021.

The next year was followed by surgery, chemo, doctor’s appointments, and loss. My mom lost weight, hair, taste, energy, and ultimately her life. She died before her 50th birthday.

This is the reason I decided to become a Local Event Director and start a GYRIG event in my community. During my mom’s journey, she frequently visited the Colon Cancer Coalition’s website for facts, guidance, and inspirational stories of survival. The goal is to spread awareness and education on the symptoms of colon cancer, encourage screenings, and provide support for patients and families.

My mom was a loving soul with an infectious laugh and always put others before herself. She was a Nurse Practitioner and dedicated her life to helping others in need.

I know she would be proud and honored to see this event take place in her community.
