This cause is very near and dear to my heart. My brother in law, Dean battled Stage IV Colon Cancer for 5 years with many surgeries, hospital stays, house bound and bed bound, but never lost his FAITH. He ministered to many and will always be my hero and my spiritual guide. When we found out he had passed I couldn't sleep of course and I wanted something that would remind me of him always. I was thinking a colon cancer ribbon or something in that line. Then it hit me, NO that did not define him. He was a man of Faith his entire life. I found the perfect item. It was a MUSTARD seed pendant, that has the paraphrase of the bible verse "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." Matthew 17:20.
He was diagnosed in 2008 and passed away in January 2015 at 50 years old.
I had lost my job right after Dean died and was very depressed. By chance, I messaged a school aquaintence who was looking for a nurse for Raleigh Endoscopy Center-Main. I am not a nurse but have been in the medical field since August 2001 and customer service for over 30 years. She actually made up a job for me until I could be a full time employee. My first official day as a full time employee was on 3/30/2015. I believe this was a message from God to not lose faith. I am still here and have learned a lot and been through a lot, but I have a GREAT Work and Home FAMILY who have been with me every step of the way.
Now my VERY personal story...My boyfriend Mike was diagnosed with Colon Cancer on 1/29/2020 and diagnosed with Stage IV on 2/11/2020 (My Daddys Birthday). He had his Colon Surgery on 2/19/2020. Thankfully Covid had not hit yet so I was able to be with him throughout this. Mike worked throughout most of his journey as an Auto Body Painter. His boss was wonderful throughout this as well. He would get chemo, leave with his pump and go to work the next day with the pump. He was the strongest man I have EVER met. He never complained or asked why me. He finally decided it was time to stop working and focus on the rest of what life has for us, this was 12/31/2021. We got diagnosed with Covid on 01/04/2022. Mike felt a little better and was able to restart his chemo on 1/28/2022. 1/29/2022 we were at the ER with massive infection, abdominal abscess and very weak. He was admitted and on 1/30/22 we were told there was nothing else they can do and that we need to contact hospice. Thank goodness Dr. Sankar Adusumilli,came in and changed his mind and did a surgery to remove the new tumor/blockage and give Mike an ileostomy and a little more time with his loved ones. Mike came home on hospice but we got a little more time together. He passed on 3/30/2022. I miss and love him so very much. My life will forever be changed. I was so blessed to have him in my life.
Colorectal cancer diagnoses have risen significantly in people under the age of 50. It is important to listen to your bodies and be proactive about talking to your doctor and asking for a colonoscopy if you have concerns.
