Nine years is a lifetime to a 10 ½ year old, but that is how long it’s been since our daughter, Andrea, lost her battle with colon cancer.

Colon cancer among the young continues to make the headline news, and yet the reason for the continued increase is not known.

Andrea's son, Connor is now 10 ½ years old, and it is so wonderful to see Andrea’s traits in him. Connor is kind, helpful, inclusive, and so much fun to be with. And he has this wonderful, hearty laugh (especially when watching America’s Funniest Home Videos!).

Connor recently won a school award for “Empathy”. The class assignment was to write a story on their computers and a classmate started crying, saying she was bad at everything. Connor walked over to her computer and typed in “you are good at a lot of things”, to which she stopped crying and was able to work. This year, Connor typed his own personal GYRIG page, then copied it and pasted it in the GYRIG website. We are so proud of Connor, for so many reasons.

Rates for colon & rectal cancer have been declining among adults 50+ but rising in adults UNDER 50. Unfortunately, young-onset patients are more likely to be diagnosed in stage III or IV, when the disease is harder to treat. Missed symptoms and misdiagnosis can often delay the correct diagnosis in young-onset cases.

Connor will be participating in GYRIG Raleigh 2024 for the ninth consecutive year, along with his Dad, many of his relatives, and many of Andrea’s dear friends. Money raised through local events are granted back to the communities in which they are held. Since 2004, millions of dollars have been granted by the Colon Cancer Coalition to local programs that promote early prevention, screening, and patient support services for this disease. By making the words colon, colorectal and colonoscopy a part of the everyday language, we believe we can overcome the fear and decrease deaths from this largely preventable cancer.

Please consider joining our family in this event through either participation in the 5K Run/Walk and/or through a donation towards the event. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
