Michael Smyers
Michael Smyers, an enthusiastic father, loving fiancé, and cherished friend, passed away from colon cancer on April 30th, 2023 at the age of 39. Exactly 7 months after discovering he had stage 4 colon cancer. The cancer was very aggressive and didn't respond to any chemo or treatments. By the end it had spread to his liver, lung, and brain. He died at home in hospice surrounded by his family.
Michael loved helping people and will be remembered for his kind and open heart, quick wit, loyalty, generosity, tenacity, resilience and infectious smile. He was known for his foresight, innovative mind, dedication to family and dreams, love of debate, and raw talent.
We created this memorial page in his honor to help bring awareness to those under 45 to increase colon cancer screening before the recommended age so they can get diagnosed in time and get the treatment they need. Colon cancer is becoming more common in those under 50 but isn't being caught until it's in late stages. 90% of colon cancer can be cured if caught early, unfortunately only 40% of cases are. No one should have to lose a loved one to cancer, but it's an even bigger blow to lose someone because no one thought to consider it as reason for symptoms because of their age.
