The Dukes 50th Reunion Nov. 6th

In Honor Of Marty Batey

Duke's Reunion Fundraiser in Honor of Marty Batey

In December of 1971 a group of seniors entered Baldwin High School's talent contest as a 1950's band called The Dukes. They rocked the doors off the place, and one of Long Island's biggest bands was born. Members have come and gone over the years (we counted more than 30 Dukes over the years), but there was always one constant: Marty Batey. Marty was one of the original Dukes, and he never left - until colon cancer took his life on September 22, 2020. We always knew there'd be a 50th reunion, but we expected Marty, our fearless leader and the glue that held the band together all these years, would be the one to plan it. We're paying tribute to Marty by making the reunion a fundraiser for the Colon Cancer Coalition. The reunion will be on Saturday, November 6th (Marty's Birthday), from noon to 5 pm at the Warehouse in Amityville, NY - about 20 miles east of Baldwin High (also 20 miles from the 1890's club, where the Dukes were the house band back in the day). There's a $20 cover. Our goal is to raise $15,000 so please consider a donation in addition to the $20 cover. You can donate on this web page or at the event - and please check with your employer about matching donations - hundreds of employers do this! Please share a Duke's memory in the Comments section! We hope to see you at the Warehouse on November 6th, but if you can't make it, you can still attend (and donate!), as we'll be live-streaming the concert from this webpage. Spread the word - and long live rock and roll!

It's incredibly sad that this is a "thing" and that Marty is gone. He was a kind and gentle soul yet had a backbone of steel. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Marty was a warm and sincere person. He ran track in high school and was a great runner. I have fond memories of Marty. One time after track practice we went to get a slice of pizza. The guy in front of us ordered a whole pie and the person behind the counter asked him if he wanted it cut in 6 or 8 slices. The guys reply was you better cut in 6 slices I don’t think I can eat 8. Marty and I just looked at each other and remained quiet due to the fact that the guy was huge. Marty was a good soul and friend to all!
