My 2022 Get Your Rear in Gear - Chicagoland Personal Page
Tracy Schaal
Tracy Schaal
Hi!! Welcome to my Personal page for the Get Your Rear in Gear 5K that I will be doing along with my team, "Here's To You AL" on Saturday, August 13th. Our team page has a lot more information, so please check it out if you have some time.
I walk for my dad, Alan G. Schaal who passed away two years ago from Stage IV Colon Cancer at the age of 67. I aim to raise awareness and encourage getting educated and getting screened. I hope by doing so it begins the ripple that becomes a wave by merely starting the conversation. To normalize talking about colonoscopies and other type of screenings because of how crucial they are in potentially saving a life.
I wish I would have done this more with my dad. He had his first colonoscopy after his diagnosis. And this is even after his cousin Lisa passed away at the age of 42 from colon cancer. It is in our family history. I only had one conversation with my dad about getting screened back in 2009 when he was 57. But never a follow up one. It is something that haunts me. I will never know but part of me wonders if he would still be here today if he would have gotten his screening, his colonoscopy at the recommended age.
Colon cancer is the 2nd deadliest cancer and yet, when caught in early stages, it is 90% curable. Screenings are so important. If you have any questions on what it's like to get a colonoscopy, please feel free to ask me. I have had two already. Educate yourself. Educate others. Knowledge is power. 1 in 24 will develop colon cancer in their lifetime. It is closer to you than you think.
Please help me support Colon Cancer Coalition by making a contribution to my fundraiser and sharing this page with your family and friends. Every dollar I raise will advance Colon Cancer Coalition's great cause! Additionally, you can ask me how you can get involved too. Come walk with us. Join our team.
I know these are some crazy and hard times and making a donation may not be feasible right now. I only ask that you do one thing. Continue the conversation. Start the conversation. At least one whether that be with your own doctor. With your family. With your friends. Whomever. There are perfect opportunities this summer when you are together for the holiday, for the birthday party, for the BBQ. It really could save a life.
Together, we can make a difference!
Thank you in advance for your time and help,
Tracy
