My best friend Michele was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008. Over the next few years, I remained by her side as she endured surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and endless pain. I went with her on many of her necessary medical appointments, assisted her with her ostomy bag, helped her with laundry, prepared meals and tried to provide her with all the support possible. On March 13th 2011, Michele passed away. She was 2 weeks away from her 45th birthday. I continue to be deeply saddened by the loss of my friend and heartbroken and empty without her. I miss her support, generosity, resilience, determination, sense of humor, patience, understanding and mostly her beautiful smile and love. I now feel an obligation to raise awareness and funds to fight colon cancer. On October 20th, I will be running in the New York City "Get Your Rear In Gear" Run/Walk presented by the Colon Cancer Coalition. Colon cancer is preventable, treatable, and often curable, when detected early. I never want to lose anyone to this disease again and hope to prevent others from suffering the way she did.
